School and Student life

Situated on a 1,400-hectare farm in the picturesque Kat River Valley, Winterberg is located just outside the quaint town of Fort Beaufort. Originally founded in 1972 as an all-boys agricultural school, we later merged with Fort Beaufort High School to become a dynamic co-educational institution offering both agricultural and traditional academic streams. Since then, we have grown in stature to become one of the most competitive and respected agricultural schools in the Eastern Cape.

We take pride in offering a secure and resilient environment for our learners. Both the school grounds and our charming hostel facilities are fully fenced, ensuring a safe "home away from home" for our boarders. To guarantee that education and daily life continue without interruption, we are equipped with solar power and borehole water systems, ensuring that our students' comfort and routines remain consistent regardless of external challenges.

At Winterberg, we strive to help students maintain a healthy work-life balance by giving everyone a chance to express their unique abilities. Whether it is excelling in the classroom, gaining practical experience on the farm, rehearsing on stage, or getting swept up in our vibrant school spirit, we create a space where students can thrive both in and outside the classroom.

Extra Mural

We offer a range of extra-curricular activities that extend education beyond the classroom. A holistic education includes opportunities for students to engage with one another, discover new passions, and express themselves in a supportive environment. We strive to provide that for our students.

Sport

Physical education is a pillar of life at Winterberg. Students are encouraged to participate in our various sporting codes, which build character and promote a healthy lifestyle. Whether on the field, court, or the track, our sports program incites teamwork, fosters resilience, and promotes healthy competition among peers.

Culture

Our cultural activities provide a platform for students to grow both spiritually and creatively. The program is anchored by our Drama department, the UCSA, and the participation in public speaking activities such as the Eisteddfod. Through these avenues, we strive to help students discover their identities and develop confidence, all while having fun and expressing their unique talents.

Team Building

We place a high value on social growth and peer interaction. To foster strong relationships and leadership skills, students engage in active team building exercises such as obstacle courses, fun runs, and dedicated leadership camps. These activities are essential for teaching learners how to work effectively as a unit and support one another in challenging environments.

School spirit is kept high through occasional sing-songs and spirit periods, while our social calendar is highlighted by memorable events like the Valentine's Ball and the prestigious Matric Farewell. Furthermore, we integrate the school into the broader community through our annual bazaar, outreach programs, and livestock auctions. These events not only teach business and agricultural skills but also serve as vital social hubs for our students, parents, and the surrounding district.

Farm

Our charming farm entrance is just a stone's throw from the main school building. The farm is 1400ha in size, with 600ha being intertwined with the Koedoe-reserve. Students get firsthand experience putting theory into practice by working on the farm. Practicals include a range of activities from milking the cows, cleaning the pigsties, looking for snares and broken fences on the game reserve, and learning valuable trade skills like welding and metalwork.

On the farm

Students gain hands-on experience caring for a diverse range of animals. Our dairy herd produces approximately 700 liters of milk daily to supply the hostel and local market, while our piggery and poultry units provide students with practical opportunities in meat production and egg collection. A highlight of the year is the "Wool School" (hosted by BKB) where Grade 10 - 12 learners work with both our own and neighboring flocks to master the skills of throwing, analyzing, and classing wool.

Beyond livestock, our agricultural program manages extensive farmland and plant life. The property features 26 hectares of citrus orchards, producing Satsumas and Navels. We also cultivate 22 hectares of lucerne, yielding about 2,000 bales annually. This substantial harvest sustains our own animals and has enabled the school to support surrounding farms and community members during recent droughts.
